Inviting lineage teachers to present introductory talks, detailed instruction, empowerments and other ceremonies is one of our most important activities and services. It is very helpful to us to know what kinds of teachings and other offerings people in the community would be interested in having. An aspect of these visits that is frequently overlooked is their role in supporting the teacher-student relationship, which is usually considered essential to Vajrayana practice. Visiting lamas almost always set aside time for private interviews in which practitioners, whether or not they are members of the KTC, can receive guidance in their personal practice. In addition, some visiting lamas accept students on an ongoing basis. The visits are thus an opportunity to meet qualified potential "spiritual friends" who can guide one's development and open the door to many teachings and practices that are not widely available otherwise.
